Once you get the good settings that suits your driving, it's so awesome. I have to admit that the gamepad on this game is really awesome, but I still think I will never use anything else than a wheel on a racing game anymore. Of course at higher rotation it feels more realistic, and especially I guess on bigger wheel such as the ones from thrustmaster. The fact that the logitech wheel is a lot smaller than a real wheel make me feel 270° is just right. I was keeping going down to 420°, then 360°, 320°, but I always ended up at 270°. 540° was better but still something was kind of missing when taking sharp turn. I have tried every angle 900 (quite funny but not very convenient). From what I understood from other comments, logitech ffb and steering input works differently from thrustmaster and high rotation above 540 to 900 are not suited for logitech's wheels on dirt rally. Personnally I had to also put the wheel on 270° rotation. It took me quite a few hours to get used to the wheel. You don't get that information on the wheel (only front). What I liked a lot on the pad(xbox 360pad) was the rear informations you get through vibration. In the beginning it was very hard for me to adapt, and my runs were way slower than with the pad. After trying the driving force gt at a friend's place, I bought a G29 at good price. I switched from xbox 360 pad to racing wheel after 60hours of play. Maybe I’ll be able to get a cheap, used one online. I like the idea with a flight stick as a handbrake. I tried the Alpine with 5 (softlock) and for me it was easier to do hairpins with smaller DOR, but I’d like to keep it realistic, at least as far as the Thrustmaster 150 allows for. Currently I’ve got only two pedals and paddle-shifters and I only imagine how much more complicated things get with clutch and H-shifter.

With a wheel there’s so much movement involved (physically). With a gamepad I just move my thumb and add the right amount of throttle and things happen. Some cars actually feel harder to keep under control with lower DOR. It forces you to work on your weight transfer management and setting the car up before turn in and keeping the car under control once it's sliding through the hairpin is actually easier to me as you can do minor corrections without the need for surgical precision when turning the wheel.

It’s so much more enjoyable and immersive with a wheel. I’m nowhere near as fast with a wheel as I was with a gamepad but I’m not going back. On the other hand FFB gives more information about what’s going on with the car. Doing hairpins is a pain with 900-1080 DOR (and how am I supposed to use the handbrake?). What’s more, you have to deal with FFB and up to 1080 DOR.

The wheel offers more precision but also requires more precision from the driver in more difficult, technical sections. Driving with a gamepad is basically building up muscle memory, it doesn’t feel like controlling the car, but rather hovering along the track and giving memorised inputs. It seems these two types of interface require a different set of skills. It doesn’t mean it’s necessarily much easier to drive with a controller. It seems as if the game is helping you when the car is sliding and when you’re going through tight turns and hairpins (especially on the exit). I’ve switched to a wheel recently and I’d like to share some thoughts.įirst of all, I think the steering is assisted when using a gamepad (compared to a wheel) and I’m not talking about the stuff you can turn off in the options menu.
